The Vet’s Guide to Keeping Your Pets Cool and Safe This Summer

Hello, pet parents! As a veterinarian and pet expert, one of the most common questions I get asked as the temperatures rise is, "How can I make sure my dog or cat stays cool during the summer heat?"

While we might love basking in the sunshine, our furry friends are far more susceptible to overheating and heatstroke than we are. Dogs and cats don't sweat like humans do; they primarily regulate their body temperature through panting and releasing heat through their paw pads. When the weather gets sweltering, that natural cooling system sometimes isn’t enough.

To ensure your pets have a safe, fun, and comfortable summer, I’ve put together my top vet-approved tips for beating the heat—along with a fantastic solution right from our Bark and Bite store!

1. Hydration is Non-Negotiable

Just like us, pets need more water when it's hot. Ensure you have multiple bowls of fresh, cool water available around the house and in the yard. If you're heading out for a walk or a trip to the park, always bring a portable water bottle and a collapsible bowl. Vet Tip: Drop a few ice cubes in their water bowl before you leave for work to keep it cooler for longer!

2. Dress Them for the Weather (Yes, Really!)

While dogs have natural coats, sometimes the intense UV rays and trapping of body heat can make summer walks miserable. It might sound counterintuitive, but the right kind of lightweight apparel can actually protect them from direct sun rays while allowing their skin to breathe.

At Bark and Bite, we highly recommend our USA 250th Anniversary Dog Vest.

Why a vet loves it:

  • Breathable Mesh Fabric: The lightweight mesh design allows air to flow freely against your dog’s body, offering exceptional summer comfort without trapping heat.
  • Sun Protection: It provides a physical barrier against direct sunlight, which is especially important for dogs with thinner coats or lighter skin who are prone to sunburn.
  • Perfect for Small Breeds: Smaller dogs are closer to the hot pavement and can overheat quickly. This vest keeps them stylish and protected!

3. Change Your Walking Schedule

Avoid taking your pet out during the hottest parts of the day (typically between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM). Stick to early morning or late evening walks.

  • The 7-Second Rule: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s going to burn your pet’s paw pads!

4. Provide Plenty of Shade and Airflow

If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure they have access to deep shade—like a large tree or a covered patio. Keep in mind that dog houses can actually act like ovens by trapping heat, so open-air shade is always better. Indoors, make sure the AC is running or that you have fans circulating the air near their favorite resting spots.

5. Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a severe medical emergency. It's crucial to recognize the early signs so you can act fast. Look out for:

  • Excessive, heavy panting or drooling
  • Lethargy or difficulty standing
  • Bright red or pale gums
  • Vomiting or diarrhea

If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cool place immediately, offer small amounts of water, dampen their coat with cool (not freezing cold) water, and contact your veterinarian right away.

Have a Safe, Cool Summer!

Summer is an incredible time to bond with your pets, provided you take a few simple precautions to keep them safe. By managing their environment and outfitting them with the right gear, you can avoid the dangers of the heat.
